It never needs to be removed from the bike, and small items like cellphone/keys/etc. can be placed in the FastPack and you can still keep it in the down position. When fully deployed, the FastPack holds about 8 liters of your gear- a jacket for those early morning manuevers, or a quick trip to the grocery store.
